It had been reputed to having been used in the past in enhancing eyebrows and thickening the volume of hair in women. Since there were no studies before or scientifically-based evidences, hand-me-down narrations are the best that we can accept as testimonials.

Properties

Like the other natural oils (coconut, shea, olive), castor oil has its own set of fatty acids. The major one is the ricinoleic acid which is beneficial to hair and skin.

In addition, the oil is also rich in omega 9 fatty acids that are also beneficial to hair and skin. With the oil’s deep penetrating abilities, it can help deliver nourishment to the skin pores and onto the hair follicles that produces the actual hair strands.

Anti-bacterial quality

Castor oil is naturally full of natural antibacterial and anti-fungal properties as well as being rich in Vitamin E, minerals, proteins and Omega 6 and 9. As a matter of fact, it had been traditionally used in treating acne and other skin conditions. During treatment, it is applied topically as well.

With ricinoleic acid, castor oil aids in keeping the pH balance on the scalp. This, in turn, helps in keeping the natural oils on the scalp, including probable damage done by harsh chemicals on hair products.

The antioxidants that are present in castor oil help keep the hair’s keratin stronger and smoother. The other fatty acids present in the oil, however, are like those found in other natural oils (coconut oil, olive oil). All have not been proven to increase the hair’s thickness.

Anti-inflammatory for skin

On the other hand, castor oil helps soften the skin. In studies, it had been known to help reduce the inflammatory response in subcutaneous tissues. This had been seen as a factor that helps in speeding up the healing process in skin wounds.

It is also attributed to help contribute in reducing the scarring faster. However, castor oil for hair loss doesn’t work ever since.
